ONE-FAMILY HOUSE – GIORGIOS SEFERIS Str, PATRAS (2023)

A two-story house, with a total area of 210m2 and a basement of 75m2. It has a swimming pool of 35sqm and surrounding land fully landscaped of 350sqm.

The idea of the design of the residence originates from the needs of its owners. Ensuring the privacy of the users from the public road and the orientation of the residence were the two main components that led the study. In order to achieve this goal, the day areas, the large openings and the double height of the living room were oriented to the back of the building where there is an imaginary continuity through the large sliding exterior frames, visually unifying the interior with the covered exterior space, the garden and the pool.

Internally, the residence on the ground floor is organized as an open plan space that unifies the living room and dining room to create a single space, warm and everyday, partially separating them with a natural boundary from the kitchen. Finally, the introverted character of the residence is completed with the anti-diametrical – in terms of the facade – opening of the entire rear face to the external rear area of the courtyard.

The central staircase running through all levels combines the timeless aesthetic value of wood and the modern performance of metal, through vertical stringers that function as a railing.

The master bedroom with ensuite bathroom and walkin wardrobe, two additional bedrooms with their own bathroom are located on the first floor and through the internal openings at the double height there is an unobstructed view of the courtyard.

The placement of the building was chosen in such a way as to enhance natural ventilation and lighting and emphasize its relationship with the backyard, isolating its relationship with the city.

ONE-FAMILY HOUSE – PATIMA CHALANDRI (2023)

A two-story house with an attic, with a total area of 230m2 and a basement of 110m2. It has a surrounding land fully landscaped of 250sqm.

On this particularly small plot, the accumulated functional needs of a family seek creative coexistence in a modern shell. The daycare and hospitality areas are set up on the ground floor level and, with their large openings, take advantage of the extroversion of the residence to the precious surrounding area. The private spaces, conversely, with smaller openings facing the street, reflect their intention of introversion oriented towards isolation, quiet and rest. Unlike the front view, the back view is designed to be open to light and view.

Given the shape of the plot “narrow face – large depth”, the volume of the residence rests on both adjacent plots. In the basement are auxiliary spaces, the areas of the electromechanical installations and the guest house which is lit by the cours-anglaise.

The living room, kitchen and dining room were organized on the ground floor. The kitchen is at the back of the plot, in direct contact with the private garden, so that the family can make the most of the relationship between the interior and the exterior.

On the first floor level, the bedrooms were organized, the master bedroom with ensuite bathroom and two more bedrooms with a shared bathroom.

In the attic is a versatile hospitality space that continues outside to a large covered living room with views on both sides of the plot, with planted areas to give the feeling that the space is in contact with the garden.

The result of this location is the creation of two main faces with southeast and northwest orientation. This installation creates two outdoor areas for recreation, planting and other functions on both sides of the plot: in the southeast there is a swimming pool of 25 m2 and planting, and in the northwest the outdoor parking space, the main entrance to the building and planting.

All residences share a common parking lot and each house has a private outdoor area and a pool area of 40.00 sq.m. Although the complex consists of functionally independent tourist residences, structurally it is designed to provide unity. Characterized by its modern architecture with elements and geometries from the local architecture of Zakynthos. Thus there are the main pure rectangular volumes which are accompanied by smaller auxiliaries that create a single residential complex with forms that refer to the traditional settlements of the island. Roofs and stone volumes alternate, creating a versatile and remarkable ensemble. In addition, the configurations of the courtyard levels have been constructed in such a way as to support the buildings and better integrate them into the natural environment. Most of the plot is kept intact in order for the natural to prevail over the artificial.
